Arc21 Eastern Region
During 2000, a waste characterisation study into the composition of waste collected in wheeled bins from households all over Northern Ireland was conducted. The conclusion reached in respect of a Northern Ireland average was as follows;

The following tables illustrate some useful statistics for the arc21 region:
1. Municipal Waste Produced
The annual amount of municipal waste managed by the arc21 Councils.

2. Municipal Waste Recycling Rate
The annual rate of recycling of municipal waste within arc21, expressed as a percentage. This includes material composted.

3. Municipal Waste Sources
This displays the proportion of waste by source, which makes up the municipal waste stream within arc21.
- Landfill Bin – the waste regularly collected direct from houses (usually in a wheeled bin) and sent to landfill.
- Kerbside Recyclates - material collected direct from houses and recycled or composted
- CA/HR Centres – the total amount of all waste collected at Civic Amenity Sites or Household Recycling Centres
- Other household – other waste streams classified as household e.g bulky/amenity collections, bottle banks, street sweepings, fly-tipping
- Commercial & Industrial – waste from non household sources e.g shops offices etc

4. Household Recycling Rate
The annual rate of recycling of household waste within arc21, expressed as a percentage. This includes material composted.

5. Household Recycling
This displays the amount of material, by collection method, which is recycled and composted.

6. Household Waste Growth
This displays the annual amount of household waste generated in arc21 when expressed as tonnes per household.

7. Materials Recycled
This displays the range of main materials collected by the arc21 Councils and recycled during the year.

The amount of material collected by the arc21 Councils and composted in 2004 was 34,304.5 tonnes.
