Procurement Process Begins - October 2008

arc21, the umbrella waste management group for 11 councils in the east of Northern Ireland, has begun a major procurement process to deliver new facilities to help meet strict EU environmental and waste regulations.
The technology, which will be a first for Northern Ireland, includes Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) to help sort and treat waste, and Energy from Waste (EfW), a form of renewable energy facility that recovers heat and electricity from waste which is not suitable for recycling.
Alderman Hubert Nicholl, Chairman of arc21’s Joint Committee, welcomed the tender publication:
“Last week we published a contract notice in the Official Journal of the European Union which marks the start of a procurement process to provide the arc21 region with modern waste management facilities that use Mechanical Biological Treatment and Energy from Waste technology.
“As we initiate the procurement process, arc21 is conducting a parallel site selection exercise to identify potential sites for the new facilities.
"As part of a wide trawl we have asked Central Government, the private sector and all of our constituent councils if they have any sites which they wish to make available as part of the site selection process. These two processes run in tandem and once preferred sites have been finalised, arc21 will publish the details and undertake widespread public consultation.”
